2009 AMRA Harley Spring Rally & Drags
Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, KY
Rain rain go away.
For everyone who's never been the Beech Bend amusement park just outside of Bowling Green, KY also has a race track. Three times a year they host the AMRA drags, and from what I had heard one of the best tailgate parties going.
This spring was apparently the worst ever for them in recorded history, the weather was horrible and obviously scared most of the people away. Everyone kept telling me I needed to get there a couple of days early to reserve a camping spot, the place would be standing room only by the weekend blah, blah, blah. But when I pulled in noon'ish on Friday the campgrounds were only half full, and never filled up much more than that.
The drag strip was pretty cool with the officially sanctioned AMRA drags, top fuel, run what you brung and a couple of other classes. The races happened as weather permitted for a couple/three hours each day.
The tailgate party in the campgrounds is usually where all the fun is at, the one & only band playing that weekend (Geneva) was actually set up on a little stage in the camping area, not the main stage down by the dragstrip. Only a couple of hundred hardcore party'ers stuck around for the late night wildness, contest, bead tossing and general midnight mahem.
I'm not sure how to write this one up, you could tell that it's usually a LOT bigger and wilder than this last show was. I plan on doing this show again, their next Drag strip event is the last weekend in June. I've heard so much about this party over the years I just have to give it another try once the weather warms up.
